One day has 24 hours, 1440 minutes, 86,400 seconds. One energy cycle is then 1728 seconds or 28.8 minutes. During acupuncture the needles must retain for at least one full cycle or 28.8 minutes. The longest should be 2 energy cycles or 57.6 minutes.

To make things simpler acupuncture session should be between 30-60 minutes. Shorter treatment then 30 minutes are not effective and should be avoided.

When our patients first come to see us, they are always concerned about their folic acid intake and feel they are deficient in this nutrient. Compelling research has been done on this topic and, according to Kenneth Fielding Morehead whose insightful perspective has been published on the Weston A. Price Organization website:

“Lately, there is a huge push to get women to take supplementary folic acid to prevent neural tube defects during pregnancy. Folic acid by itself it a simple nutritional constituent. It’s only one nutrient in thousands that are a part of whole, nutritionally complex foods. While it is claimed that supplying this nutrient in pill form may have a positive effect in reducing neural tube defects, why are women told that this is what they need rather than being given a choice between supplementation or a diet of whole foods that provides this nutrient in context? Is this ignorance or rationalization? Either way, it seems more respectful to fully inform the public rather than simplifying the truth and giving women an uninformed choice. Lack of whole foods is the root cause of folic acid deficiency, not a lack of pills.”

This book systematized and consolidated ancient medical experience and theory into one compendium. Using the philosophical ideologies of Yin, Yang and the Five Elements. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine demonstrated that the human body is an organic whole, and that its health and illness is intimately connected to the natural environment. It expounds on meridian theory, as well as many other issues, such as, physiology, pathology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, acupuncture and the use of materia medica, etc.

The opening chapter of the Yellow Emperor Classics states; “The yellow emperor asked; “There are some people who get old and can still bear children. How is this possible? His doctor Qibo answered: These people preserved their longevity well, their energy was never obstructed and their kidneys energy was always full. Despite that these people who are fertile still have an age limit, which is eighty-eight for males and forty-nine for females. This is the age when the essence of heaven and earth dries out. The emperor asked: there are daoists who are over a hundred and can still bear children. How is this possible? Qibo replied: this is because people who follow the Dao can become old and keep their body in a perfect shape. Even though they are old they can still bear children.”

Two thousand years ago, the ancient Chinese doctors realized that a woman can be fertile until she is 49 years old and even older if she conforms to nature (or follows the Dao as they called it). Should you still feel that you run out of time if you are only 40? Choosing a natural solution to conform to nature will improve chances of conception considerably.

There are many approaches to healing. I would like to focus on Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine believes in recovering health, it believes in your body and it believes that nature is on your side. Is it always possible to regain our health to an optimal state? probably not. We can however, do our best to get as healthy as it possibly can be. If you had western fertility treatments so far, did you ever hear any of the following:

1. You are too old.

2. Your egg quality is too poor.

3. Your FSH is too high.

4. Your only option is donor egg.

Maybe 90% of the patients that I see have been told one or more of the above. Why is it then that many of the patients, who come into my office, get pregnant naturally with the Hunyuan method? Did something change with their age? egg quality? FSH? I think that their health just got better, which made everything else better. Why is it then that many patients undergo fertility drugs and shortly thereafter their FSH goes high, or that they get cysts, or that they gain weight, or that they feel sick. This is absolutely not “getting healthy”. If anything it is a deteriorating health.

Is infertility treatment in Chinese medicine the same as Western medicine? I don’t think so. The difference is described above: Chinese Medicine believes in becoming healthy to allow a pregnancy.

Chinese medicine is so powerful. It can make unhealthy people healthy again and while doing that it can make infertile people fertile again, and all with great grace and purity. Why, then, are most acupuncturists excited about the acupuncture for IVF and not about the Chinese medicine for natural conception? I think, in general, today’s success rate of natural conception with Chinese medicine is low. What do we have to do to raise the success rate of natural conception? We, acupuncturists, have to know Chinese medicine well. How do we do that? We research the Chinese medicine classics. These classics, to a large extent, have no English translations. We therefor must spend the necessary time in learning classical Chinese language and few years more to research these classics. I am afraid that most of us don’t have the time and the will to do it. That is why natural conception rates with Chinese medicine is low when compared to western treatments. I have spent thousands of hours learning Chinese language and the Chinese medicine classics and that is why the Hunyuan method success rates do not fall below Western reproductive endocrinology rates. On the contrary, all patients who get pregnant naturally in my office tell remarkable stories of success.

What should we do as acupuncturists? should we give up on Chinese medicine and start practicing Western medicine? Should we do acupuncture for IVF and call it Chinese medicine? or should we try to get better in Chinese medicine, help many patients as possible with natural conception and bring the Chinese medicine back to life?

I have created the Hunyuan method exactly for that. So far there have been scores of patients who conceived naturally with my method after Western medicine gave up on them. I hope other acupuncturists will follow through and bring the Chinese medicine back to life.

Many infertility patients have diets deficient in appropriate levels of healthy saturated fats. Lean protein and lowfat dairy products cannot sufficiently nourish our cell membranes and immune systems, and, when used consistently, threaten our fertility. It is important to incorporate healthy traditional fats into our diets, including quality sources of butter, beef, fish and milk - the key is in the quality as not all of these are produced the same way and, due to the increased factory production and denaturing of foods, the nurtitional value is rendered useless. This becomes ever so important during the IVF process, as the body’s state of health is inevitably compromised by the harsh fertility drugs. The benefits of saturated fats and cholesterol are best demonstrated in breastmilk, which is abundant in both due to their critical role in growth and development.

“I took fertility drugs at the beginning of this cycle, as instructed by my reproductive endocrinologist, and I just found out that I have developed two cysts one on each ovary. I did not get my period for six weeks now as my estrogen levels were too high. I asked my doctor if it is possible that the cysts are from the fertility drugs. He looked at me with a stern expression and replied: “ The likelihood of this is a mere five percent”.

This story and many more are routine in the Hunyuan Acupuncture center. Recently I have chosen, in random, twenty patients and asked them about previous fertility treatments, before coming to the Hunyuan center. I have found out that sixteen patients out of the twenty asked have had some issues with ovarian cysts following conventional fertility treatments. This added up quickly to a staggering eighty percent.

Many patients are weary of using herbs. Many believe that much is unknown and that there are no studies out there. But isn’t there really any study out there. Hundreds or even thousands of years of accumulated experience with herbal formulas have taught us a tremendous amount of knowledge. In Chinese medicine the knowledge is so vast that ancient practitioner could forecast years in advance what the consequences of taking herbs will be. Practical studies of one generation after another have proved fruitful over the centuries with the creation of a very systematic and successful herbal formulas. Western science is an evolving science and should be viewed as such. There are so many things that are unknown as of yet. Meaning that many infertility conditions that are unknown or unexplained, in reality might have a reason, however it is simply unknown as of yet. In Chinese medicine, after thousands of years, there is no such thing as unknown. The Chinese medicine science is ripe and comprehensive. that is why so many unexplained infertility patients become pregnant in the Hunyuan center.

A patient’s natural response is normally to feel healthy as the treatment progresses and then conceive. This is a normal course of events in the Hunyuan center. This is because the human body is designed in such a way that when health is absent, the body prevents conception from happening. When health regained this blockage is removed and conception becomes possible. Testimony to that are countless infertile couples who have conceived naturally after years of failed conventional treatments.
